Michelangelo's David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created from 1501 to 1504. The statue portrays the Biblical hero David at a moment of contemplation. The most widely accepted interpretation is that the statue represents David immediately before his battle with Goliath, unlike previous depictions which portray the hero after his victory.
